What do a Master’s Degree and extensive knowledge of Bravo TV’s Real Housewives franchise have in common? Our new Account Manager, Sarah Holland, has both of them!
Sarah hails from Maryland, but has been bouncing from place-to-place for the past 7 years. She graduated from Susquehanna University in 2014 with her B.A. in English, as well as completing a minor in Anthropology. She then did a year in a service corps, serving in Washington, DC as the Communications Associate for Luther Place Memorial Church. As her service year neared its end, Sarah didn’t have definitive plans. She had applied to graduate school on a whim–only one school–but had been waitlisted. In an exciting twist of fate, Marquette University pulled her off the waitlist that May and offered her a full tuition scholarship and a stipend assistantship. So off to Wisconsin she went, graduating in spring 2017 with an MA in English Literature, a 4.0 GPA, a publication credit, and an obsession with cheese curds and frozen custard.
But Wisconsin, while a mecca for dairy-lovers like herself, is far too cold and flat for Sarah’s liking. After graduating, she moved down to Blacksburg to be with her fiancé as he finishes his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. After some months as a barista at Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea in Blacksburg (where she learned to make some excellent latte art), she got a tip from a friend of Blue Mobius about a job opening and applied immediately.
Sarah’s exceptional writing & editing skills and her ability to learn at light speed wowed us; she’s a chameleon of written voice, loving the process of transforming her style for clients’ needs. There’s never a dull moment with her in the office, as her penchant for bizarre mishaps (like flushing all of her keys down the toilet) makes us laugh (don’t worry: we’re laughing with her, not at her).
“Marketing wasn’t on my radar as a career,” she says. “People always say you can do anything with an English degree, but they struggle to direct you towards specific paths other than teaching. But now that I’m here and doing what I love every day, it’s crazy that no one suggested this sooner!”
“Copywriting is sort of like fiction,” she explains. “Just like I have to know and understand each individual voice of my characters–from their cadence and vocabulary to their intentions and goals–I have to understand our clients’ voices. It’s so much fun to parse out their voices, to speak as someone else for a bit, and to be always changing how and for whom I’m writing.”
While Sarah’s first love in life is her cat, a close second is storytelling. She hopes to be a published author one day, and has been working on a novel intermittently for the past decade and seriously for the past few years.
When not working, she’s either taking pictures of her cat or watching reality television. Most likely doing both at the same time. She also enjoys running races, watching animated films, and oil painting. Her pies aren’t half-bad, either.
We’re so excited to have Sarah’s creativity, writing skills, and humor on board. Join us in welcoming her, not only to Blacksburg, but to our team as well!
